Yes, it’s that time of year again when both young and old of the crazy persuasion get in to boats – some seaworthy and some not – paddle down the mighty Ganaraska River braving rapids, dams, limestone shoals, vicious salmon and trout and aggressive spectators with squirt guns and plastic bags of water.

Due to the extreme cold this February the ice build up on the river was severe. The race has been delayed until the 18’th to allow the ice to clear but let me tell you that water will still be cold.

This is a day of enormous fun for everyone – a carnival atmosphere prevails with fast food stands, music and laughter. The best place to see the action is right in town just up the street from the LCBO store. Either the banks of the river or the bridge are great places to watch from. The stretch of the river that goes through downtown has the most rapids and shoals and is where most of the capsizings take place.

They have their own website where you can see pictures of many of the past races, maps of the race, etc. Click on http://www.floatyourfanny.ca.

Come for the weekend and enjoy some of the other things going on in Port Hope. For example Buddy Holly’s Rockin Dance Party will be playing live at the Capitol Theatre on Saturday night. You can get your tickets online at Capitoltheatre.com.

Hope to see you for some fun.
